Review velocity: the local SEO signal most contractors ignore

· 4 min read

Most contractors know reviews matter. Fewer know that the pace at which reviews arrive matters just as much as the total.

That pace is called review velocity, and it is one of the strongest levers you have over your local search rankings.

What review velocity means

Review velocity is how many reviews your business collects, and how regularly.

Picture two roofing companies. One has a hundred reviews, but the newest is eight months old. The other has sixty, and gets a new one every few days. To a customer scanning the results, the second company looks active and trusted right now. Google reads the same signal.

Why it helps you rank

Local search is built to show customers businesses that are real, active and well regarded. Fresh reviews are direct evidence of all three. They also often mention the service and the neighborhood, which gives Google more context about what you do and where.

For a business trying to become the authority in its city, a steady flow of reviews is not a nice-to-have. It is part of the foundation.

Why it is hard to keep up

Almost every business intends to ask for reviews. Almost none ask consistently.

  • The tech finishes the job and moves straight to the next one
  • Nobody remembers to send the request
  • The ask is awkward, so it gets skipped
  • The customer is happy in the moment and forgets by the evening

Asking manually depends on memory and motivation, and both run out.

Build it into the job

The most reliable approach is to make the review request part of finishing the job, not a separate task.

Here is the simple version:

  1. The tech finishes the work.
  2. They tap a single trigger link on their phone to mark the job complete.
  3. An automation sends the customer a review request straight away, while the result is fresh.
  4. The request also invites the customer to add photos to their review.

Meanwhile the tech captures photos of the finished job. Real photos of real work, tied to a real neighborhood, are some of the most valuable content a local business can post.

Reviews with photos

A review with photos is more convincing than text alone. It shows the actual work, and it shows the customer was real. Asking for photos in the same request costs you nothing and makes every review stronger.

What to do this week

Start by looking at your last ten jobs. How many turned into a review? If it is fewer than half, you are leaving ranking power and customer trust on the table.

Then decide how the ask will happen automatically. That is exactly what our reputation management system does: it turns every finished job into a review and a set of photos, without anyone having to remember.
